Every year this massive two-day event takes place at Woodvale Aerodrome, near Southport. Cars are parked the full length of the long runway and the MERSEYSIDE TRANSPORT TRUST provides the buses to carry people from their cars into the event.
This year, on Saturday 4th August, I made my debut as a driver. Another new star was L835 (FKF 835E) a Leyland Atlantean dating from 1965 (picture right). It had passed its MOT test a few days previously for the first time since it was "scrapped" in 1990. I had the honour of driving this fine machine from the hangars at Burscough to Woodvale in a convoy of splendidly preserved Liverpool buses.
It was an impressive turnout, including A267 (VKB 900), L501 (501 KD), L835 (FKF 835E), 1111 (UKA 562H), 1236 (BKC 236L), 1551 (OLV 551M), 1836 (TWM 220V), 6036
(UEM 36V), 1032 (A112HLV) and 1055 (A135 HLV). I had the pleasure of driving all except 6036 and 1055, and they were a credit to the dedicated volunteers who have restored them, and maintain them.
As a registered charity, the MERSEYSIDE TRANSPORT TRUST rely on donations - if you run a car and think that is expensive, think of the cost of running a bus! This was illustrated when L501 developed a fault and a recovery firm had to be paid to tow it back to Burscough. Please look at their website (link at top of page), and consider joining, or sponsoring a bus from as little as £5 per month. More pictures can be seen on my FOTOPIC SITE.
