My Auntie Jean (Jean Charlton from Widnes) is what can only be described as a "letter box enthusiast".
She is a member of the LBSG (Letter Box Study Group - you can visit their site from the "LINKS" page).
Until recently, this page contained over 130 photographs of letter boxes from around England. However, as the space on this website costs money, the collection has been moved to Auntie Jean's own Fotopic website, where the space is free! This link will take you there, but don't forget to come back.
Meanwhile, here is a taste of some of the rare letter boxes on the new site.
Top left: HECKMONDWIKE (Greenside). This is the oldest surviving box in Heckmondwike. The Illuminations that appear each Christmas on the Green behind the wall are reputed to have been the inspiration for the Blackpool lights.
Top right: DEWSBURY. This box was inside the Safeway supermarket, but was removed when the store closed down two years ago.
Middle left: AYSGARTH in the Yorkshire Dales. This rare box stands beside the only bus shelter.
Middle right: LIVERPOOL (Woolton). As a child I posted letters in this box on Hunts Cross Avenue, near Whitney Place. It is very rare, in that it has no Royal insignia.
Bottom left: GOATHLAND - better known as Aidensfield in the TV series "Heartbeat". This famous letter box is on the front of the village Post Office.
Bottom right: BRIDLINGTON, Cross Street. This very rare box is one of less than a hundred, erected during the very short reign of King Edward VIII in 1936.
To see a picture in better quality, left-click on it. Then you can right-click to zoom in further. When you want to return to the gallery just left-click on the little square at the top right corner of the picture.
If you would like to submit a picture of a letter box for inclusion on this page, or the new picture site, please e-mail it to me (in JPEG format). Please remember to tell me your name, and the location of the letter box.
